It was an intermediate 2- storey terrace house which has been built since the 1960s. It was a typical house where living, dining and kitchen are on the 1st sty and rooms are upstairs. The existing finishes were dated and there were very obvious leaking issues from the old roof. There were a few layout issues like the store being located in the middle which breaks up the space from the front to the back on the 1^st sty, there was not much of ventilation and thoroughfare, the main door was located right in front of the main gate and the rooms were very long due to the plot size. On the 2^ndsty, only the Master Bedroom had an en-suite bathroom, while the common bedrooms had to share a common bathroom.

The Clients are a young couple with a kid who wants to retain as much of the existing structure and staircase location to minimize structural works. They also wanted to have a guest room for their parents on the 1sty, a study and 2 bedrooms with a separate family room upstairs.

We created a more open plan which allowed plenty of natural light into the house. The main door was relocated to the left so that it is not directly opposite the main gate.  The existing sky light at the staircase was retained and we created a new one at the family area which made the place very bright during the day. All the bedrooms have also plenty of natural light coming in. As we tried to retain most of the existing structure of the house, there were low beams at the bedrooms which we added timber screens and created cosy study spaces within the bedrooms. We did a timber screen infill for the yard at the back so that the client can retreat to the back to dine outdoors when the weather is less harsh in the evenings.

The result was a very modern mid century feel home that is now bright, airy and comfortable for this young family. We were glad that by working with the existing structure we managed to create an entirely new look and feel to the home.
